St. George Gate, initially called New Gate, owes its current name to its proximity to the ancient Chapel of St. George. Its prospectus is moved by a pair of Ionic tapered columns, on two high plinths, flanking the arch and supporting a robust entablature with an inscription in Latin, scrolled pediment cusp and coat of arms of Castromediano family.
