Chiesa e Convento di San Francesco

A group of Franciscan friars arrived in Treviso in 1216 and took office in a chapel dedicated to Our Lady. The community soon became numerous and in 1231 began to build Church and Convent. Church has a Latin cross plant with two aisles, of which the largest is covered by wooden ceiling a ship's hull. The portal is a fresco attributed to Marco Veneziano (1235); inside, on the left wall, you encounter a fresco of St. Christopher, Romanesque-Byzantine work of late thirteenth century. In the main chapel is the painting of Four Evangelists, probably work of a pupil of Tommaso da Modena. Church houses the tombs of Pietro Alighieri and Francesca Petrarca, sons of poets. Church houses also Holy Conversation (1480) by Alvise Vivarini, today at Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. Outside is the statue of St. Francis, work by contemporary sculptor Roberto Cremesini.
