The present name, San Donato di Ninea, reminds precisely Ninea, an ancient town founded by Enotri, according to the description of the Greek geographer Ecateo of Mileto, is traditionally located in the territory of San Donato. To be seen, the Church of San Donato al Pantano, just outside the town, where medieval frescoes of great quality have been found, which have led to a retrodation of the building, at least of its original nave-like body XI century. Mural paintings are placed on multiple layers along the right flank, on the counterfed, on the apsidal wall and on the left presbytery.
