Basilica del Gesù Vecchio

Where Via Giovanni Paladino, Napoli

The Church is called "Old Jesus" (or Immaculate Conception of Don Placido) due to the fact that at a short distance, a new larger church was built, known as the Church of New Jesus (or Trinity Major ). Basilica was founded in 1554. The facade was built at the end of the 17th century by Giovan Domenico Vinaccia in Baroque style, with a convex pattern: in the center opens the access door, overlaid by large rectangular window. The interior of the church is a Latin cross, with a single nave and side chapels, and has many works of art, including: the painting depicting San Luigi Gonzaga, by Battistello Caracciolo (1627); the paintings by Marco Pino da Siena (Transfiguration, Our Lady and Circumcision); some canvases by Girolamo Cenatiempo (1712); the shrine of San Francesco Saverio, work by Cesare Fracanzano (1641) and the statue of San Francesco Borgia by Pietro Ghetti. The main altar encloses a sculpture of Immaculate. In the sacristy stands the painting by Francesco De Mura (mid-eighteenth century).
