Piazza del Gesù Nuovo
Piazza del Gesù Nuovo is one of the most significant and most famous square of Naples, which takes its name from the Church. Due to its characteristics, the Square can be reached only on foot. Fulcrum of some of the most important monuments of Naples, the Piazza houses the monumental Obelisk of Immaculate, in marble and bardiglio. On the west side, the Square homes some historical palaces of the late Baroque style (Pandola Palace and Pignatelli di Monteleone Palace); on the opposite side, the Church of the Poor Clares, an important medieval religious building; in front, two of the most important churches of the city: the Church of the Gesu Nuovo and the Monastery of St. Clare. The first, built on the ancient Sanseverino Palace, has a facade with ashlar stone diamond piperine which represents the most typical example of Neapolitan Baroque. The second church, in the Gothic style, is the official burial of the Bourbons. Next to the Church of the Gesu Nuovo, there are two other monumental buildings: the Congregations Palace, today Liceo "Genovesi", and the "Professa Palace", today Liceo "Eleonora Pimentel Fonseca".
