Napoli Sotterranea

Where Vicoletto I San Paolo, Napoli

The subsoil of Naples is crossed by a large network of tunnels, galleries and aqueducts, partly visited. The development of the underground network began in Roman times: baggy little that allowed the passage of a man, the aqueduct tunnels branch off in all directions. At times, on the walls, you can still see traces of the plaster plumber. The basement was used by the Neapolitans on several occasions, especially as air raid shelters to protect themselves from the bombing that hit the city during the Second World War. The cavities were lit and arranged to accommodate hundreds of people: remains of furniture, graffiti and various objects in excellent condition still recall those moments of great fear. There are several routes of access to the underground network, one of which is visible in Via Sant'Anna di Palazzo a Chiaia, from which branch cisterns and caves, tunnels and shafts, remains of the Greek-Roman period and catacombs.
