Archivio di Stato di Napoli

Where piazzetta del Grande Archivio, 5, Napoli

Housed in the monastery of Santi Severino e Sossio, the Naples state archive is one of the largest and oldest cultural institutions in Europe: it is among the city’s most important yet little-known monuments, and bears precious witness to the identity and history of the whole of southern Italy. Its attractions include the room where Torquato Tasso stayed, the impressive Atrio dei Marmi, and the Atrio del Platano, which Antonio Solario, known as Lo Zingaro, frescoed with the story of the life of Saint Benedict. The rooms that follow are the Sala Catasti, formerly known as the Stanza del Capitolo, and the Sala Filangieri, which were frescoed by Belisario Corenzio in the early seventeenth century.
