Chiesa di San Cristoforo e Cimitero della Certosa

Where Via Borso, Ferrara

The Church of San Cristoforo alla Certosa is the main worship building of Certosa Cemetery in Ferrara, formerly located in a quiet and distant part of the city, as the tradition of Carthusians wanted, nowadays inside the city walls. The facade is unfinished and seems to be intended for a marble coating. The interior consists of a single nave with six chapels whose design is attributed to Biagio Rossetti. The first Grand Claustro (Grande Cloister), on the south side of Church of San Cristoforo at the Carthusian was built by Pietrobono Brasavola in about ten years from 1452, and its arcade model in the loggia was then taken over by Canonic architect in his work of nineteenth-century expansion. At the north side of the church, closer to the walls, in the 1930s the second Great Claustro was built. It was designed in 1933 by Carlo Savonuzzi.
