Santuario della Madonna Nera di Viggiano
The Shrine of the Black Madonna of the Holy Mount of Viggiano is 12 km away from the town, and is frequent place of pilgrimage. It was built probably in the fourteenth century, in the place where legend has it the discovery of the statue of the Madonna. The image was worshiped in ancient city of Grumentum when it was destroyed by the Saracens, and then hidden in a hole, still visible behind the high altar, and found thanks to the appearance of mysterious fires. The first document on the Church dates back to 1393. The festivities in honor of the Black Madonna are divided into two periods of the year: the first Sunday of the month of May and the first Sunday in September.
