Parco Archeologico di Grumentum
Grumentum was an ancient Roman city in Lucania, whose ruins can be visited at Archaeological Park located at the foot of the hill where now is Grumento Nova (PZ), in "Spineta". The first settlements in the area can be traced back to the sixth century BC, however, the founding of the city itself dates back to the third century BC by Romans. Urban layout of the city, dating back to the foundation of the third century BC, It is elongated, depending on orographic conditions of the hill, and consists of three main parallel streets intersected at right angles by secondary roads. The city was surrounded by walls with six gates on a perimeter of about 3 km and occupied an area of about 25 hectares, of which only one-tenth has been brought to light. The most important remains are currently divided into three monumental areas: Theatre of Augustan age, near which are the remains of two small temples of Imperial era and those of rich domus called "House of Mosaics" for the presence of floors fourth-century mosaic in some quarters; Forum, enclosed by arcades and the remains of two temples on the south and north sides, hypothetically identified with capitolium (main temple) and Cesareum (temple dedicated to imperial cult), on the west side are the remains of basilica and a thermal building; finally, the remains of Amphitheatre, built on the slopes of the hill in the first century BC and modified in Imperial era. Outside the walls they are also found monumental tombs, an early Christian basilica and an aqueduct. Many of the exhibits and found testimonies are kept in Archaeological National Museum of Alta Val d'Agri.
