Area Archeologica di Oplontis (Sito UNESCO)

Oplontis was a suburban area of nearby Pompeii, corresponding to the current Torre Annunziata, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79. The archaeological excavations carried out have brought back to light a heritage that, starting in 1997, was inserted, together with Pompeii and Herculaneum, in the list of UNESCO sites. The name of ancient Oplontis appears for the first time during the Middle Ages, in Tabula Peutingeriana. The whole area was buried under a blanket of ash during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AC. and a resumption of life occurred only many centuries later, with the development of the modern city of Torre Annunziata. Since 1964, the excavations have returned several buildings and shrub and thermal structures, the most significant of which are Villa di Poppea and Villa di Lucio Crasso Tertius.
