The construction of the new church dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption, one of the most beautiful in Italy, originates, according to tradition, by something that happened in the twelfth century AD. A ship carrying a Byzantine painting of the Madonna was shipwrecked, when the sailors heard a voice coming from the picture, saying to land on the coast. Locals carried the picture of the Virgin in the St. Vitus's Church, but the morning after they found it near the sea, on a tree "myrtle".
