The archipelago of Borromean Islands is located in Lago Maggiore, between Stresa and Pallanza. The archipelago consists of three islands, an island and a rock. In the fourteenth century Borromeo family, powerful feudal lords of the area but originating in San Miniato, became owners of the islands and thus began their transformation. Even today, the family still owns Isola Bella and Isola Madre, as well as the three cliffs known as Castelli di Cannero due to the ruins of Medieval fortifications.
