It is the largest of the quarries of Syracuse. It was used since the sixth century BC as a quarry to enrich the city of monuments. There are traces of later use in Greek times as a place of worship and pagan and Christian necropolis. At the end of the sixteenth century was built above the Capuchin Convent, which later Quarry took name. Since that was used for the uses of the convent, creating the garden and an irrigation system. From the second half of the eighteenth century until the late nineteenth century, when Syracuse entered the circuit of Grand Tour, travelers followed left ecstatic reports of this place. Vivant Denon visited it in 1778. Quarry is affected each year by series of cultural events, "LatomiArte".
