Piazza Vincenzo Selvaggi, San Marco Argentano, (Cosenza)

A church (since deconsecrated) is located in San Giovanni degli Amalfitani, mentioned in documents since the age of Duke Robert. It indicates the presence of Amalfi citizens who perhaps followed Sikelgaita, princess of Salerno and second wife of Duke Robert. Between these ancient walls, precious vestments which once belonged to Sammarchese Bishops, paintings of prestigious schools, silver artefacts (monstrances, pyxes, pastorals), convey the centrality of religion which for centuries characterised locations favoured by Guiscard. The striking reliquary cross is a rare masterpiece of Medieval gold smithery which according to legend was donated by the Duke to the Abbey of La Matina on the day of its consecration.
