TORRE DEL CERRANO
Where S.S.16 Adriatica, Km 431, Pineto (Teramo)
On a knoll just by the seaside it is possible to visit one of the watch-towers that Charles V ordered to build in the Sixteenth century on the Adriatic coast in order to keep under observation the Turks' incursions. Other similar towers, which were part of the same defensive system, are situated in the near-by towns of Giulianova, Alba Adriatica, and Martinsicuro, where the tower was also used to control the border of the reign, marked by the river Tronto. The Cerrano Tower, entirely made up of brick, has a square base, scarp walls and corbels and is surmounted by another smaller tower, built later.
