Cabiate

Cabiate is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of Milan and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) southeast of Como. As of 31 December 2011, it had a population of 7,412 and an area of 3.2 square kilometres (1.2 sq mi). Cabiate borders the following municipalities: Lentate sul Seveso, Mariano Comense, Meda, Seregno. Physical geography Cabiate is far: 16 km from Monza 21 km from Como 28 km from Milan 35 km from Lecco 40 km from Varese History The name of the town come from the word claveato. The final ending in -ate underlines a probable lombard foundation. First historical news received about the origin of the town come from 745, when a document identifies it with the name Vico Capiete. Primarily the town grew around a castle which was the center of the activities. The original position of the town was beside Terò creek, the small river which flows in the center of Cabiate. The history of Cabiate is particularly linked to the near Meda and to the Brianza. Before 1024 a huge number of cabiatesi depended from the monastery San Vittore in Meda (which was part of the Pieve di Mariano Comense), which at any rate, thanks to the abbess Allegrezza, gave the power to Giacomo da Rho, founder of the family da Rho, which in Cabiate will subsequently built a residence. In subsequent years, the history of this area was linked to Milan lords, who in 1535 passed their power to Spanish. The town was turned to Marliani family, then, in 1538, to Giussani, then Taverna, coming back to Marliani and, in the end, in 1643 to Inverigo's Crivelli. Three centuries later, the Duchy of Milan finally passed to the Austrians who, on a local administrative level, built the bridge by masonry over Terò, which were previously by wood. During the World War II the German crossed in Cabiate, in order to retire towards Como. After April 25 three people were killed because of were accused to be fascists. Architecture Religious architecture Santa Maria Nascente's Parish Church Santa Maria Nascente's "chapel" is firstly quoted in 1389 in a document about the Pieve di Mariano Comense. The first parish structure was erected in the fourteenth following Ottavio Cabiati's project. The Milan archbishop, cardinal Ildefonso Schuster, blessed and laid the foundation stone at 7 September 1942. Then, the cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI, consecrated it at 7 September 1958. The structure is realized by extruded bricks, it has an octagonal form and it's characterized by a high central copper dome, with a spire form. The front of the dome recover part of the old structure and preserve a portico topped by saints statues. The frescos in the internal part of the lantern were realized in 1988 by Cabiate's design school. Other churches Santuario Santa Maria Annunciata The old church, become insufficient in order to welcome all the citizens, was extended in 1947 and converted in Santuario dell'Annunciata at September 1958, after the consecration of the new Parish Church. Saint George's Church Civil architectures Oratorio San Luigi Gonzaga (one of the biggest youth center in Lombardy). Villa Padulli (19th century) Villa Padulli was built by a Veronese family named Padulli, who since the 18th century had a big influence with Borromeo or Melzi d'Eryl. The Padulli family in the 19th century chose Cabiate as their official residence. The house was built in two different times: the patronal house was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The bondage house was erected since 1860, knowing a very bright period when, among the family guests, there were Antonio Rosmini and Alessandro Manzoni. The structure was built on a natural terraced hill, absorbed in a big park which dominate all the town. The interiors, with the typical structure of the country houses, were realized with frescoed ceilings and mosaic floors. There's an attempt in order to restructurate the house, because of a real risk of collapse. The most famous are "Porada" (partner of Pallacanestro Cantù in the Basketball Serie A and of Torino Calcio in the Football Serie A) and the "Ezio Bellotti", which is partner of a huge number of trophies, in particular cycling races. By tram/autobus From 1912 to 1952, Cabiate was served by tram line Monza-Meda-Cantù, which then was replaced by the autobus C80, which cover the same line. Administration Since 2004 the mayor is Maurizio Brenna, who apparteins to the civic list "Cabiate oggi domani", on the middle-left. Sports Despite its limited size, the town is really active in the sport world: Soccer Best result: 15th in the Campionato di Eccellenza Lombarda Group B 2007-2008 (the sixth division of the Italian Football system). Actual championship: Campionato di Promozione Lombarda Group C 2012-2013 (the seventh division of the Italian Football system). National and international tournaments International tournament "City of Cabiate" (Easter period) In 2003 C.G. Cabiate Calcio won this tournament in the category Esordienti 1991 (who also won the Andalo Cup in 2001 and the Dolomiti Cup in 2002) thanks to a victory at the penalties against Wisła Kraków (final result: 5-4). "Per Stefano" tournament This tournament is dedicated to a dead boy. Youth teams of important football teams participated; in the last edition, 2001, U.C. Sampdoria won 2-1 against Juventus F.C.. Soccer with 7 players Best result: 4th at the Como provincial finals 2011/2012 (it was qualified because it was 2nd in the Campionato CSI Serie A Group B provincia di Como). The race takes part at the end of September. Bikes A small urban circuit 0,8 km long, organized by Moto-Club Cabiate. Cycling "Ezio Bellotti" Trophy (patronal feast) - Individual time trial on an urban city 1,5 km long. Gymnastic The artistic gymnastic society in these years obtained great results in regional competitions. The gymnasts plays at Christmas and at June.
