The construction was commissioned by Marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi, Neoclassical architect Simone Cantoni. The building, built on the west bank of Como Lake, was intended as summer residence for Marquis, as evidenced by large garden overlooking the lake, largely rearranged by the next owner, Marquis Raimondi. The name derives from the presence of magnificent elm, at the time centenary and today no longer esistente.
