The original core of the collection dates back to 1971 when artists and professors of the Academy of Fine Arts (including Aldo Borgonzoni, Pompilio Mandelli, Enzo Pasqualini and Ilario Rossi) donated some of their works to the Archbishop Emeritus of Bologna, Cardinal Giacomo Lercaro (1891 - 1976), to celebrate his eightieth birthday. Continuing the work of the Cardinal, the Foundation that bears his name can now boast a collection of over 1,600 works, with a section dedicated to the sculpture of the twentieth century. The present site was opened in 2003.
