Raccolta del Dipartimento di chimica "G. Ciamician"

Where Via Selmi, 2, Bologna

Officially constituted and organized since the year 1985, the collection comes from the recovery of dispersed material in the deposits of the then Institute "G. Ciamician" specially ordered and finally restored and exhibited in the hall of the ground floor in antique cabinets, also 'they restored. Connected in a logical path, which evokes the atmosphere of the chemical laboratories of the early '900, the three main groups relate to scientific equipment, laboratory glassware to, samples of chemicals of historical interest. The library houses an important archive, which also retains many old and rare books, dating from the seventeenth century, exhibited in rotation, even on theme specifico.L 'beginning of the path, in the lobby of the department, is marked by the shift of a study area with furniture traditionally belonging to one of James Ciamician. The angle of the lab on the second floor, which also includes a beautiful wooden hood, ending the museum, which in this way provides a concrete example of the evolution of Chemistry Bologna. Among the scientific equipment we report one of the first polarographs (tool for recording the current-potential curves with mercury drop electrode), dating back to the thirties and identical to the original prototype of Heyrowsky (Nobel prize for chemistry in 1959), reflecting the Electrochemical school that flourished for several years in Bologna. No less important are the various spectroscopes, the polarimeters, the Pulfrich photometer (ancestor of the modern spectrophotometer), equipment for elemental analysis and the many scales. Among the scientific equipment for teaching outstanding collection of vacuum tubes (Crookes tubes), which emphasizes the scientific and cultural value that these devices have had in the history of science. The tubes of the collection can be dated around the years 1920 - '30 and illustrate, in a hypothetical nature trail, many properties of the electric discharge in rarefied gases.
