Torre dei Caduti
It's one of the most important monuments of "lower city", built in 1924 to celebrate Bergamo fallen in World War I and exalt the nationalism. The Tower, with a square plan, is 45 meters high and was designed by Marcello Piacentini in the space known as "Meadow of St. Alexander", which housed the historic annual fair. Entirely of sandstone, has a powerful structure, lightened by inserts such as ornamental and commemorative clock and some marble sculptures (bronze statue of "Victorious Italy"; putti and bas-reliefs). The balcony rests on allegories of weapons fighters, with under the "Bulletin of the victory" of General Diaz. The interior is spread over five floors and exhibits on the walls the names of the fallen, engraved in gold on black marble on the first floor, and a series of panels that illustrate the urban development of the city.
