Sabbioneta (Sito UNESCO)

Where Sabbioneta (Mantova)

It was declared in 2008, with Mantua, World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is part of the circuit "The most beautiful villages in Italy". The town of Sabbioneta is crossed by the 45th parallel and reflects the canons of Renaissance "ideal city". The city was founded by Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna between 1554 and 1591, the year of his death, in the place where there was a fortress of his grandfather Ludovico and an ancient settlement. For Vespasiano Gonzaga, Sabbioneta had to be above all a fortress and the power of its wall circuit certainly made it, at that time, one of the most armed bulwarks of Lombardy of Spanish domination. The town houses several monuments: Palazzo Ducale, Teatro all'Antica or Teatro Olimpico (1590), designed by Vincenzo Scamozzi, Gallery of Ancients, Palazzo Giardino, Church of the Assumption, Church of the Beata Vergine Incoronata, Church of Carmine and Synagogue with historic Jewish quarter.
