Basilica paleocristiana di via Madonna del Mare

Where Via Madonna del Mare, 11, Trieste

The early Christian basilica was discovered and investigated in 1963, during a reset road. It is a building of a Latin cross with a polygonal apse, built in two phases, between the beginning of the fifth and early sixth century. It's remarkable the mosaic floor, which in the first phase shows geometric decorations white and black, in the second (set at a level of only 6 cm higher) is enriched pelta polychrome motifs, with dual head and intersected diamond pattern. A peculiarity of this mosaic carpet is the abundance of inscriptions traced with the tiles in the floor itself (visible even in fragments torn from its original and posted on the walls of the entrance to the site): do not mention the names and professions of fourteen benefactors, as well as the surface of the mosaic from them donated to the community; among them stand out subjects of senatorial rank and people linked to the local economy, also of Eastern origin. The basilica was characterized by the presence of ancient bones of one or more martyrs, of unknown identity, which made her one of the most important centers of aggregation of the first Christian  Tergestina community.
