San Martino is set in a green meadow basin, surrounded by Natural Park Paneveggio-Pale di San Martino. From the village numerous Dolomite peaks are visible. It is a popular tourist destination for many ski slopes and summer mountaineering, as well as Rally San Martino di Castrozza. The birth of the resort is dated 1873, with the construction of the first alpine hotel that replaced the woodshed the hospice, at the proposal of mountaineer Englishman John Ball.
