Grotta dell'Uzzo

Where grotta dell'uzzo, San Vito Lo Capo (Trapani)

Grotta dell'Uzzo is one of the most important Prehistoric sites in the whole of Sicily. Inside it has been found traces of human presence dating back to about 10,000 years ago. Probably still earlier are the remains of some animals found in the antrum such as, rhinos, lions and mammoths. The community that occupied the cave consisted of a small group of hunters who lived in the area, the cave itself had to serve as a shelter for the night and defense against ferocious animals. Over the centuries, the community learned to cultivate the land and feed the fish that had to exist copious in the sea very close to the cave. The interior walls have revealed a necropolis with human remains dating back to Mesolithic, now preserved at "Antonio Salinas" Regional Archaeological Museum of Palermo.
