Palazzi Imperiali del Palatino - Domus Augustana

Where Via dei Cerchi, 119, Roma

The Imperial Palaces of Rome occupied the Palatine Hill, which overlooks to the north of the Roman Forum and the south of the Circus Maximus. It is an impressive complex of buildings that express visibly the power and wealth of the Emperors, from Augustus until at least the fourth century. The Imperial Palaces are made up of two structures: one public, open to nationals and foreigners, and private, where he lived the Emperor and his court. The first unit of the Imperial Palace was established by the complex of buildings that belonged to famous personalities of Res Publica: rising from the Forum, we meet the Domus Tiberiana, still largely underground, occupied in the sixteenth century by the Farnese residence; Livia's House, decorated with wall paintings of great value; the Augustus's House, that all that remains of the rooms intended for private use of the Prince. On the great esplanade at the top of the Hill, lies the Domus Flavia, or the Palace of the Flavian Emperors (Vespasian, Titus and Domitian). Everywhere there are traces of mosaics and fine marble decorations. Many pieces of historical and artistic value are collected in the Antiquarium of the Palatine, built in the nineteenth century. The Livia's House opens with a large courtyard supported by square pillars. Around the atrium, facing a series of small rooms (cubicula). Environment said tablinum linked the courtyard and atrium in the east. This, along with two side rooms, still retains original features dating back to 30 BC. The Augustus's House appears to be divided into two parts: the first, with smaller rooms, is intended for private use of the Princeps, while the second, placed to the west and consists of larger rooms, it is reserved for official functions. Private wing of the residence have been preserved original paintings, among which are relevant ones of "masks" inspired by theater design, and floral motifs and garlands of pine. To Tiberius is given the work of widening of the Imperial residence on the west side of the Palatine. His residence had to foresee also the presence of a Library. The side towards the Forum is the largest: there is the Palace of Domitian, built by architect Rabiro shortly after 81, the main imperial complex on the Hill. It consists of three sectors: deputies to the public functions, recreational (the Palatine Stadium was home to private shows) and private.
