Mercati di Traiano

Where Salita del Grillo, 35, Roma

The complex was built simultaneously with the Forum of Trajan in the early second century, to take up and support the cutting of the slopes of the Quirinal Hill, and is separated from the court by means of a paved road. The structure resumes semicircular exedra Trajan hole and consists of six levels. The dates of the brick stamps indicate that the building dates largely to the reign of Trajan, attributed to his architect, Apollodorus of Damascus. The buildings are separated by an ancient route, the Via Biberatica. The lower part of the buildings of the "Great Chamber", spans three floors and two classrooms, "Classrooms of the head" and the "Little Chamber". Two staircases connect you to the upper floors. Upstream of the road, stands the "Central Body". Trajan Markets are an articulated architectural complex that, using the construction technique of opus latericium (concrete coated with bricks), uses all available space taken from the edge of the hill. The finish brick is maintained even in a decorative: in particular on the facade of the "Great Chamber", an order of pilasters framing the windows on the second floor, topped by triangular pediments, arched and flanked by triangular pediments. The rooms had a modular structure, covered with barrel vaults, they were equipped with a large door with threshold, lintel and doorposts, topped by a small square window that gave light to a wooden loft. This is the typical form of commercial environments (tabernae), present on the ground floor of the Roman insulae. These environments have suggested that for the complex a commercial function, from which the modern name of "Markets". Pavements using the opus spicatum (brick cutting willing herringbone), who was often superimposed on a second layer pavement in black mosaic. Opened here in 2007, the Museum of the Imperial Forums want to illustrate the ancient architecture of the Forum and their architectural and sculptural decoration.
