Palazzo dell'Arengo

Where Via Massimo D'Azeglio, 20, Rimini

The Arengo Palace is a majestic building in Romanesque-Gothic style located in Cavour Square, in Rimini. Topped by battlements, it was based, in the late Middle Ages, the People's Council of Rimini. The porch was erected by the mayor in 1204, as noted by an inscription reported on one of the pillars. Upstairs, there are frescoes of the fourteenth century Rimini school. According to tradition, the porch was a large boulder, said lapis magnum, on which insolvent debtors were sentenced to beat three times the bare bottom, pronouncing the formula "cedo bonis". The building has a bell tower, which was originally also used as a place of detention.
