Piazza Fontanesi

Rectangular in shape, lined with lime trees and surrounded by porches on two sides, was born after the demolition of the block (1783) on which stood the Convent and St. Mary Maddalena's Church. The Square, remained the traditional market on Tuesday and Saturday morning, was settled in the late nineteenth century with the planting of trees and dedicated to Antonio Fontanesi. The modern flooring highlights the path of Secchia river, which once ran through the city and the memory of which has remained in place names of the surrounding streets. Overlooking the Square a few elegant buildings, such as the fifteenth century Calcagni Palace (then Friggieri, and Clerics).
