Augusta Library, located in the Constable della Staffa Palace, was born in 1582 from the donation that the humanist Prospero Podiani made to the City of Perugia of his private library of approximately 10.000 volumes. In 1623, it was opened to the public and as such is one of the oldest public libraries, as well as the most important of the Municipal Library System of Perugia. To the predominantly religious Funds, received through the suppression of religious after the Unification of Italy, were added bequests and donations of libraries of famous men, expression of secular  Liberal, Positivist and Risorgimento thinking, who have enriched the character of the total collections. At 2012, the size of book was about 385.319 documents, 3.408 manuscripts, 1.330 incunabula and 3.771 periodicals. The Old Fund contains sixteenth 16.500 and 55.000 editions from 1600 to 1830. The Collection of Prints is made up of almost 30.000 pieces, in a period of time ranging from the sixteenth century to the twentieth century.
