Fontana Maggiore

Fontana Maggiore is one of the main monuments of Perugia. Located in the central IV Novembre Square, it receives more than 800 years the water from Pacciano Mount. It was designed in Gothic style, between 1275 and 1278, by Nicola Pisano and his son, with the collaboration of Bevignate da Cingoli  for the architectural part, and Boninsegna Veneziano for the hydraulics. Made to celebrate the arrival of water in the acropolis of the city from the new aqueduct, the Fountain was damaged by the earthquake of 1348, resulting in unauthorized conversion of the order of the panels. It consists of two concentric polygonal marble basins, surmounted by a bronze cup decorated with a group of nymphs, by Rosso Padellaio. The decoration is centered on 50 reliefs and 24 statues that represented Months of the Year, with the zodiac signs, the scenes of traditional agrarian and feudal culture; Liberal Arts and characters of the Bible and the history of Rome.
