Porta Sole (Arco dei Gigli)

Where via Giovanni Andrea Angelini Bontempi, 21, Perugia

Arc of Lilies is one of the openings along the walls of the Etruscan city of Perugia. According to some, this is where the ancient Sun Gate was quoted by Dante Alighieri in Paradise, which had its original location at the highest point of the city, on the homonymous Sun Hill. Transformed into acute in the thirteenth century, the Arc is remembered as "Lilies Gate", in honor of Pope Paul III Farnese, visiting the town in the sixteenth century, he had put on top of the symbol of his family, a lily. On the structure can still see the building work: from large blocks of travertine of the original Etruscan walls, up to the finest Medieval brick.
