The Etruscan Augustus's Arch is one of the seven gates of the Etruscan walls of Perugia. It was built in the second half of the third century BC and restored by Augustus in 40 BC, after his victory in the War of Perugia. The siege of Perugia culminated with the burning of the city, of which there are traces in the remains of a Roman villa, discovered in excavations under the St. Lorence's Cathedral. In the Augustan period, in the stones of the ancient Etruscan arch was carved the inscription "AVGVSTA PERVSIA".
