Via Monte Napoleone

Where Via Montenapoleone, Milano

Via Monte Napoleone in Milan is one of the most important areas of luxury, a must for trendy shopping. Ancient "Contrada del Monte", the Street takes its name from the Napoleonic institution for the public debt. It winds along the ancient route of the Roman walls (following the course of Seveso River, today closed under the road surface). In this Street have lived different personalities of Italian culture: the writer Carlo Porta, in Taverna Palace, the poet and writer Tommaso Grossi, in the opposite building, and here Giuseppe Verdi composed its "Nabucco". The Street was also the scene of important historical events, such as the coordination of the patriots who fighted during the Five Days of Milan. From the late nineteenth century, it's characterized as "luxury street", hosting antique dealers and internationally renowned jewelers (Annibale Cusi, Buccellati, faraone, Pederzani and Lorenzi cutlery). From the '50s, Via Monte Napoleone is one of the most important in world trade, characterized by the salons of the most prestigious fashion houses (part of the "Fashion District" along with the stringers and parallel Via della Spiga, Via Manzoni e Corso Venezia). It has inspired the eponymous film by Carlo Vanzinas of 1987, on the phenomenon of "yuppies".
