Duomo di San Giorgio

Where Piazza San Giorgio, 6, Melpignano (Lecce)

The Cathedral of San Giorgio is the result of a substantial restoration and extension work carried out between 1785 and 1794 on the ancient parish church from the 16th century. The facade preserves original sixteenth-century portal with the relief depicting St. George who kills the dragon. The interior, with three naves and a Latin cross, houses exquisite Baroque altars in the transex arms. The presbytery, belonging to original structure, is enriched with decorations referring to the beginning of the Baroque and frescoes dating to the 16th century depicting St. Leonard, St. George, Madonna and Child and angelic figures playing the lute.
