Teatro Romano

Where Via di Porta Napoli, Chieti

Not far from the center of Chieti you can admire the ruins of the Theater dating from the first century AD. The buildings that surround it today, they have hidden all the orchestra and proscenium. Currently, you can see the north-eastern side of the wall of the auditorium in opus mixtum. The auditorium is located partly on the hill of Civitella, and partly covered with barrel vaults. The Theater was composed of two levels, as evidenced by the semicircular corridor that blocked the floor above. The stands could hold about 5000 spectators. The Theater was about 80 meters in diameter; the main entrance opened into a climb stepped replaced by Vico II Royal Gate, followed by the corridor place on the auditorium, probably concluded from games of arches.
