Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta (Duomo)

Piazza Duomo, 10, Catanzaro

The Cathedral of St. Mary Assumed is the main place of worship in the city of Catanzaro, the seat of the Archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace. The Cathedral stands on the site of the first Norman cathedral, built in 1121 and dedicated by Callistus II to St. Mary Assumed and the Apostles Peter and Paul. In 1309 was built the Chapel of St. Vitaliano, leaning against the front left side, near the entrance said "Bring the Elm", in whose niches were place the relics of St. Vitaliano, patron Saint of the city, of St. Fortunato and Irenaeus (patrons of the Byzantine city); in 1588, was built also the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, giving the building a Latin cross. The Cathedral was damaged by bombing in Second World War and suffered a controversial restructuring.
