Museo diocesano e gallerie del Tiepolo

Where PIAZZA PATRIARCATO, 1, Udine

The Diocesan Museum and Tiepolo Galleries are housed, since 1995, in the eighteenth Archbishop's Palace, once home of the patriarchs of Aquileia. The interior of the building is an extraordinary tribute to the grace of color and wisdom scenic of Giambattista Tiepolo. Established in 1963, the Diocesan Museum from April 29, 1995 is based in the Patriarchal Palace of Udine, a residence time of the Patriarch of Aquileia and now archbishop. The framework architecture and painting of outstanding beauty in which were set up museum collections was behind the decision to call the whole complex "Diocesan Museum and Galleries of Tiepolo". It includes about 700 works, some of which are on public display. A significant part of the artistic heritage preserved by the Museum comes from the parishes of the Diocese of Udine. The section of wooden sculpture is, in fact, almost entirely composed of works which, for reasons of conservation and protection, it is preferred to accommodate in a facility that offers more guarantees of safety than the original places of worship. The rooms in which they are set up the various collections and the main floor are a further point of excellence for the Museum. In the palace is in fact possible to enjoy the beauty of the eighteenth century frescoes by Giambattista Tiepolo, who decorated the behest of the then Patriarch Dionisio Dolfin, the ceiling of the staircase of honor, the Gallery of the guests and the Red Room. Also in the main floor it can admire the beautiful grotesque Giovanni da Udine in the blue room, the stucco of the Yellow Room and the patriarchal Library, guardian of a rich collection of books.
