Largo Vescovado

Where Discesa Vescovado M., 20, Tropea (Vibo Valentia)

On this Largo once stood the Sea Gate, which was accessed through a ramp that connected the Navy and the Ammunition Bastion, the powder magazine part of the ancient system of fortifications along the Walls of Belisario, the Castle and Vatican Bastion, that made Tropea an impregnable city. According to the chronicles of the historic Campesi, the Sea Gate was covered, in the mid '600, by the skin of a large whale that was stranded in the neighboring beaches. It was demolished towards at the end of the '800, while the Ammunition Bastion, which for centuries had housed the tropean Parliament, was demolished during the restoration works of the Cathedral, in 1929.
