It has its first origin in Napoleonic times: numerous religious houses whose collections of books went to enrich it. Realized only in 1861, its development was very rapid and, in a few years, the acquisitions bring the total volume to more than 15.000. In 1932, was ordered the transfer of the Library to Mauri Palace, who also became the seat of the Spoletina Academy and Section of the State Archive of Spoleto. The building was built in the early decades of the '600 by the Mauri family. The first floor consists of large rooms decorated with frescoes by Alessandro Bottoni (1622), Giuseppe Valeriano (1740) and Domenico Sergardi (1748). In the lounge there is a large noble marble fireplace and a carved wooden ceiling. On the ground floor, where it was recently unearthed a mosaic of the Lombard period (sixth century AD), for many years it has been home the Typography of Umbria, one of the oldest printing houses in the city, founded in 1866. Currently, the Library It boasts 110.000 units, including books, pamphlets, magazines, manuscripts and prints, of which about 19.000 belong to the Old Fund. Among the valuable works, two illuminated Bibles of the thirteenth century, numerous incunabula and Cinquecentine. The Library has a kids section, a game room and a room covered courtyard used as newspaper library and literary café.
