It is an institution that promotes research and higher education on the High Middle Ages (V-XI century), through international congresses, weeks of study and publications. It is housed in the Ancaiani Palace. It was founded in 1952 by Giuseppe Ermini, Rector of the University of Perugia, then Minister of Education. In the late '80s, under the chairmanship of Ovidio Capitani, next to the congress activities, the Centre decided to also promote specific investigations and editorial work that, every year, leading to Spoleto distinguished scholars from all over the world, excellence of  international Medieval studies. For several years, the Center care and finances the archaeological investigations at the Albornoziana Rock. Among the publications, 29 necklaces and 8 periodicals.
