Trastevere

Where Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, 24-26, Roma

In the Middle Ages, Trastevere had narrow, winding and irregular. Thanks to its partial isolation (beyond the Tiber) and multicultural environment since the time of ancient Rome, its inhabitants, called "Trasteverini", were formed almost a population of its own. Today the District still retains its character through the winding streets covered with cobblestones ("sanpietrini"), overlooked by the Medieval buildings. The night is filled nightlife thanks to the wealth of restaurants and pubs of the most typical (very famous the "Cencio" and "La Parolaccia"), as well as cinema, markets (St. Cosimato was recently renovated), workshops and shops. Another trait that characterizes the area, are the monuments to Gioachino Belli and to the Roman poet Trilussa. The district is part of the Janiculum Hill, known for his "Walk".
