Via del Corso

Where Via del Corso, Roma

Via del Corso connects Piazza Venezia to Piazza del Popolo, and is the central artery of the "Trident": the system of three roads (Via del Corso, Ripetta and Babuino) that by Porta del Popolo drives the traffic to the major basilicas. In the Middle Ages, the original straight, subject to the flooding of the Tiber, was abandoned for a road to higher altitude, only to be brought back to its origins in 1467, by Pope Paul II, who transferred here the "Racing Carnival" (from which derives the name of the street). On Via del Corso overlook several palaces and churches: coming from Piazza Venezia we can meet Bonaparte Palce, Salviati, Odescalchi, Doria (with Doria Pamphili Gallery), Marignoli and Sciarra Colonna; continuing, the Church of St. Marcello, St. Carlo al Corso, of Jesus and Mary and St. Giacomo in Augusta, with its fourteenth century hospital. At the end of Via del Corso there are the two churches of St. Mary in Montesanto and St. Mary of Miracles, overlooking Piazza del Popolo. Other points of interest along the Way are: Largo Goldoni, where is located the house where the playwright has lived and, at number 18, the Goethe's house.
