The Historic Centre of Rome was added to the World Heritage List in 1980, during the 4th session of the Commission held in Paris, In 1990, following the request made by the Holy See in agreement with the Italian state to expand the site to the extraterritorial property inside the site of Rome and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the International Council of Monuments and Sites.The property includes a series of structures of incomparable artistic value, produced over almost three millennia of history: from monuments of antiquity (such as Colosseo, Pantheon and the complex of Foro Romano and Fori Imperiali ), to the fortifications built over the centuries (like the city walls and Castel Sant’Angelo) to the urban developments from the Renaissance and Baroque periods up to modern times (like the Sistine area, il “Tridente”, from Piazza del Popolo and  la Scalinata di Piazza di Spagna; and Piazza Navona), civil and religious buildings with the richness of their pictorial and sculptural decorations (like Campidoglio, Palazzo Farnese, Palazzo del Quirinale, Ara Pacis, Basilica Maggiore di San Giovanni in Laterano, Santa Maria Maggiore and San Paolo fuori le Mura), all created by some of the greatest architects and most renowned artists of all time.
