Villa Borghese is the third largest public park in Rome, containing the Italian garden, English-style buildings, small buildings, fountains and ponds. The nucleus of the estate was previously owned by the Borghese family in 1580, the site has been identified in which the position of the Lucullus's Gardens (horti luculliani). The building of the Villa, "Villa Borghese Pinciana", now houses the Borghese Gallery, it was built by the architect Flaminio Ponzio and completed by Giovanni Vasanzio. The building was designed by Camillo Borghese to contain the Bernini sculptures, including the "David" and "Apollo and Daphne", Antonio Canova's "Pauline Borghese" and paintings by Titian, Raphael and Caravaggio. Villa Borghese also houses the Biopark of Rome, with the adjoining Museum of Zoology. Among the many historic buildings, such as the Casino of Graziano, the Casino Giustiniani, the Aviary and the Meridiana with the wonderful Secret Gardens, restored according to the original set-century; among Neoclassical and nineteenth century buildings, the Casino of the Clock, the Fortezzuola, the large Lake Garden, redesigned and built in 1786 by Antonio Asprucci, characterized by a romantic artificial island dominated by the Temple of Aesculapius, reached by short boat trips. The Villa is also equipped with facilities for leisure, play, and cultural events: Museum Canonica, home-studio by the artist Pietro Canonica, the Casino of Raphael with a playroom for children, the House of the Roses and the Film House, the Orangery transformed in new Museo Carlo Bilotti, with contemporary artwork. Near Siena's Square, it was set up a large circular theater, the Globe Theater, on the model of the Elizabethan theaters, associated Shakespeare programming.
