Mausoleo di Augusto

Where Piazza Augusto Imperatore, 5, Roma

Funeral monument wanted by Emperor Augusto, Augusteo, was developed on seven concentric rings that peaked in a dome on which a cypress forest extended, as Etruscan use, and the bronze statue of the owner. It is also inspired by Hellenistic tomb of Alexander the Great and Mausoleum of Alicarnasso. In front of the entrance, two pillars affixed the bronze plates with official autobiography of the Emperor, Res gestae Divi Augusti, whose copy was engraved on Temple of Augustus and Rome, in Ankara, and in buildings of other Roman provinces . The two granite obelisks brought from Egypt to adorn the entrance were reused and are now in Quirinale Square and in Esquiline Square. In the 12th century Mausoleum of Augustus was transformed into a stronghold by Colonna family, then into the garden and vineyard, amphitheater, concert hall (Correa Amphitheater), until returning to its original nature only in the 1930s, by the will of Mussolini. A major restoration project aims at the full recovery of the monument and the creation of an internal route with projections on Rome's history.
