Quattro Fontane

Where Via delle Quattro Fontane, 18, Roma

The intersection of the ancient Via Pia and Via Felice is characterized by the presence, at the four corners, of Four Fountains, that give the name at the intersection itself. The four works in travertine were made between 1588 and 1593, taking advantage of the rectangular niches of different sizes obtained in the corners of the buildings. The subjects, all different, are grouped in pairs similar: two bearded male figures, allegories of the Tiber and Arno rivers, that face respectively two women, Diana and Juno. The first two symbolize Rome and Florence, while women are respectively symbol of loyalty and Fortress. All figures are lying on their sides, with water that is poured into small semicircular basins. Tiber and Juno have a rich decorated background, while Arno is much smaller, with a simple relief of vegetation from which sprouts a lion, and Diana none at all, but is equipped with several characteristics of the insignia of Pope Sixtus V. The design of the fountains of the Tiber, Arno and Juno is perhaps by Domenico Fontana, while Diana is attributed to Pietro da Cortona.
