Isola Tiberina

Where Via di Ponte Quattro Capi, 6, Roma

The Tiber Island, born in a floodplain, is the only urban island of the Tiber, in central Rome. It is linked to the two banks by Bridges Cestio and Fabricio. Legend has it that the Island was formed in 510 BC by sheaves of wheat harvested in Campo Marzio. It was home to the Temple of Aesculapius, the god of medicine, whose cult was introduced in 292 BC following the plague. On the ruins of the Temple, the Emperor Otto III wanted to build a Church in the X century dedicated to St. Adalbert and St. Paul Bartholomew. In the Church has preserved the image, considered miraculous, of the Lady of the Lamp, linked to the flood of 1557. On the Island arise today two hospitals: the Fatebenefratelli Hospital, located in front of the St. Bartholomew's Basilica, and the Jewish Hospital.
