Porta Asinaria

Where Piazza di Porta San Giovanni, Roma

It got its name from the ancient Via Asinaria and dates back to the period of construction of the walls built between 270 and 273 by the Emperor Aurelian. The Asinaria is the only one, between the gates of ancient Rome, to have both cylindrical towers flanked by square towers, on confirmation that, as the other two, was originally an opening is not relevant, in the center of the towers that made up the normal architecture of the wall, in fact, a fortress.
