Palazzo Colonna
We have news of a Palace and a Castle in the same area where is the current one, from the twelfth century, along with other buildings of the Colonna family. The main body of the building, already knocked down by Pope Boniface VIII, was rebuilt in the fourteenth century and was home to famous people. At the behest of Cardinal Girolamo Colonna, around 1650 it began an ambitious project of restructuring and consolidation of various buildings into one large building complex. The work was directed initially by Antonio Del Grande and, at his death (1671), by Girolamo Fontana. The facade of the building itself was designed by architect Paolo Posi. In the Palace Theatre, already existing in 1610 when he took Girolamo Rainaldi, they were represented important works. The same Girolamo Colonna built the wing's most famous building, the Colonna Gallery, to house the rich collection of the family that started, especially in the paintings, will become one of the most important cities. The building retains all the charm of an aristocratic Roman Baroque palace: in addition to the splendid voult of the Gallery, painted by Giovanni Coli and Filippo Gherardi, several rooms are decorated by Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari, Benedetto Luti, Pompeo Batoni. In the Hall of the Gallery were filmed scenes of the last sequence of the film "Roman Holiday".
